Coccus hesperidum

Posted by
daniela (Berlin, Germany) on 2 July 2013 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio.

yikes, the first time I ever saw them, on my mom´s oleander last weekend. Not only some.
There are known in english as the Common Scale Insect or the Soft Brown Scale, in german as the Orangen-Schildlaus. Don´t google images of them on the net - not a pleasant experience.
Interestingly they like the taste of Oleander (Nerium oleander) sap - which is poisonous.
As far as my research goes, we can get rid of them by washing them away with soapwater and a cloth, or cutting down after bloom =( I think we´ll try a wash first.
