Residenzschloss Dresden - Stallhof

Posted by daniela scharnowski (Berlin, Germany) on 16 June 2012 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The "Stable Yard" of Dresden Castle with the ring riding columns from yesterday in the back. In the 17th century it was the arena for many big tournaments. It was completed in 1591 during the reign of Christian I of Saxony and is one of the oldest tournament places preserved in original form in the world (I just learned that.).

The arcade on the right is called the "Lange Gang" ("long corridor") and is connecting the Georgenbau / Georg´s building ( you see in the centre ) with the king´s stables, today known as "Johanneum" (where I stand).

Wikipedia has some fantastic old photographs online how it looked before and after war.

edit:
I noticed the first uploaded shot to be somewhat low in contrast, here´s the updated version now.
