" The Common Crane (Grus grus), also known as the Eurasian Crane, is a bird of the family Gruidae, the cranes.
It is a large, stately bird and a medium-sized crane at 100-130 cm (40-52 in) long, with a 180-240 cm (71-96 in) wingspan and a weight of 4.5-6 kg (10-13.2 lbs).
It breeds in wetlands in northern parts of Europe and Asia. The global population is in the region of 210,000-250,000, with the vast majority nesting in Russia and Scandinavia.
It is a long distance migrant wintering in Africa, southern Europe, and southern Asia. Migrating flocks fly in a V formation.
The Common Crane is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies." wikipedia

This is a crop of one of endless pictures I took when the cranes flew over our heads - not easy ;)

Wonderful sense of motion.

@john4jack: I had no idea about the difficulties of capturing a swarm of birds like this... They fly so high, very fast! and the groups of them fly so close together - I´m very happy I got this =)

Nice shot Daniela, difficult conditions.

John from Geneva, United States

I like the sense of motion here being the up and down of the wings, as opposed to the flight of the birds. Different is cool.
There's a movie called Fly Away Home about a guy and his daughter who used an ultra-light plane to help birds fly south. Based on a true story: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116329/

@John: I remeber that movie - do you know "Winged Migration" ? Phantastic photography!

Kiwisa from North Shore, New Zealand

Very beautiful - there is almost an abstract quality to the shapes. Well done on capturing this.

@Kiwisa: To me it comes more like a painting, but that´s the denoising ;)

Christel from Köln, Germany
